CUs Launch the GR8 Saver Scheme

Credit unions throughout Ireland have today launched Credit Union National Youth Savings Week (10th - 16th May 2010). This is a movement wide initiative to encourage young people to become GR8 Savers with their local credit union. The initiative will be run through over 500 credit unions throughout the island.

Commenting on the launch Mark Bailey, President of the Irish League ofCredit Unions underlined the importance of instilling a saving habit in young people:

Given the harsh economic reality facing many Irish families today, there has never been a more important time to focus on providing financial education to our young people. A healthy attitude towards money is crucial to ensure that children don’t develop bad habits when it comes to money management.

The benefits of teaching children about money early on are both immediate and long term. In the short term, they may develop strong saving habits, learn how to make smart purchases and learn why they can’t immediately get everything they want. In the long term, we can help them avoid getting into debt. And by teaching the value of saving for the future, you can put them on the road to financial security.

Launching the GR8 Savers campaign and National Youth Savings Week was Cork hurling goalkeeper, Donal Og Cusack.  Speaking at today’s launch in  Dublin, Donal said: I am delighted to be associated with the credit union GR8 Saver  initiative for National Youth Savings Week. As with any skill, if you develop it at a young age, it tends to stay with you for life.  I would encourage any  young person to start saving with their local credit union today.

Credit Union National Youth Savings Week runs from the 10th - 16th May in over 500 credit unions throughout the island.
